THE PREDICTION

This match should be kept well away from an accumulator as two of the most unpredictable players on tour meet for a potential thriller on Friday. World number 30 Sloane Stephens put in a blistering performance to beat in-form Varvara Gracheva in straight sets on Wednesday, backing up an excellent opener over Karolina Pliskova, but the former finalist is always vulnerable to a capitulation. Similarly, world number 58 Yulia Putintseva is much better than her current ranking suggests and she grabbed her best result of the season on Wednesday in a three-set victory over a top clay-courter in Qinwen Zheng.

This is a proper head-scratcher that will be decided almost entirely in the moment between two natural talents who rarely find their high ceilings. Putintseva leads their head-to-head record 3-2, and she won their only meeting on clay at the Nurnberg Open in 2018, but Stephens has the better recent form on clay and she thrives at Roland-Garros. All five of their previous meetings have gone to three sets to offer a tempting alternative here but it would be just like the pair to break that streak here. Back Stephens to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners and leave the result up to chance.
