Former world number three Sloane Stephens remains one of the more unpredictable players on tour with a remarkably high ceiling that she struggles to find for more than one match in a row. The 30-year-old has arguably been in decent form so far this season, with recent defeats to Iga Swiatek. Sorana Cirstea and Anna Kalinskaya no great embarrassment, but a loss to the returning Ana Sevastova last week in Austin should have been avoidable. World number 70 Mayar Sherfi offers the American a reasonably straightforward opener here as the Egyptian is far form her best on a hardcourt. 27-year-old Sherif took a set form eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters last spring to prove her abilities on clay but this first meeting with Stephens should be a tough task, particularly as home advantage will firmly be behind the 2017 US Open champion. Back Stephens to start well in straight sets.
