World number four Elena Rybakina started a little shakily against a hugely impressive Jennifer Brady but she turned the screw from a set down to edge through. The 24-year-old came perilously close to completing the rare Sunshine Double back in March with victory at Indian Wells before a runners-up place to Petra Kvitova and she added the Rome Masters to her now five career titles. Rybakina should be considered a contender for every tournament she enters on her favoured hardcourts over the coming months and she finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January to look a serious challenger at the US Open next month. 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens played well to beat Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets on Tuesday and she was handed a useful walkover to the round of 16 after Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament.
The 30-year-old has impressed in patches over the summer, particularly in her run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros, but this first meeting with Rybakina looks too steep a challenge. Back the Kazakh to win in straight sets.
