THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Sloane Stephens remains the most unpredictable player on the WTA tour with one of the highest ceilings, but lowest floors, around. The 30-year-old looked in strong form at the Australian Open last month, just losing out to eventual quarter-finalist Anna Kalinskaya in three tight sets, but she was well beaten by Sorana Cirstea last week in Doha. 22-year-old Clara Burel set a career-high WTA world ranking of 44th after an excellent start to 2024, reaching the third round in Melbourne with a career-best ranking win over Jessica Pegula before a run to the Linz Open quarter-finals. The Frenchwoman qualified handily to bring some momentum into the main draw in Dubai but Stephens is capable of anything at any time. Back Burel to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
