THE PREDICTION
World number six Caroline Garcia is the defending champion here in Cincinnati after stunning the field this time last summer, beating top 10ers Maria Sakkari, Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka before Petra Kvitova in the final. The 29-year-old is far from the level that she found last summer, en-route to winning the WTA Finals in Fort Worth last November, but she is well capable of bursting back into form at a moment’s notice. World number 38 Sloane Stephens is perhaps even more frustratingly unpredictable as a another insanely talented player with a high ceiling and a low floor. The 30-year-old beat Elisabetta Cocciaretto in straight sets on Monday for a strong start to Cincinnati but she has failed to win back-to-back matches in each of her last three tournaments since making the round of 16 at Roland-Garros. Stephens beat a peak Garcia in Guadalajara late last season but the Frenchwoman leads their head-to-head 4-2. Leave this one out of an accumulator but it would not be a huge surprise to see Garcia struggle under the pressure of defending, so back Stephens to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
