World number 36 Sloane Stephens conceded just four games to Elise Mertens on Tuesday to make a big statement at the San Diego Open but calling a winner from this match is almost laughably difficult. Stephens and world number 10 Caroline Garcia are two of the most innately talented players on the WTA tour but also two of the most erratic and unpredictable, with Garcia leading their storied head-to-head 4-3 as things stand but Stephens winning each of their last two encounters. Two of their last three matches have seen three sets and four of their seven meetings have seen at least a tiebreak to suggest this could come very close indeed but Garcia will have to improve markedly on recent performances as she brings a two-match losing streak into San Diego after an upset (but unsurprising) defeat to Yafan Wang in the first round of the US Open. Back Stephens to earn at least a set on home soil but leave this head-scratcher out of an accumulator.
