THE PREDICTION
This is a huge clash so early on at the US Open between 2017 champion Sloane Stephens and world number 19 Beatriz Haddad-Maia, who reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros back in June. Former world number three Stephens beat Madison Keys to the title here six years ago in her golden two-year period but she has failed to make it past the third round in New York in each of her last four appearances, although she has won in each of the last three first rounds. 27-year-old Haddad-Maia has made at least the round of 16 in each of her last two Grand Slams but she suffered a serious injury at Wimbledon that looks to have slightly hampered her since, returning much earlier than expected at the Canada Masters. A three-set defeat to eventual runner-up Karolina Muchova last week in Cincinnati suggests the Brazilian has the edge here but Stephens is such an erratic performer, with a ceiling far higher than her opponent. Back Stephens to earn at least a set with the backing of an adoring, partisan crowd behind her to leave the victor up to chance.
