This could be a big week for former world number three Sloane Stephens after claiming her most recent of seven WTA titles at the WTA 250 event here in Guadalajara last season. The 30-year-old also won the 2016 Acapulco Open to show an affinity for Mexican hardcourts and reached the quarter-finals at the Masters event here late last season before defeat to eventual champion Jessica Pegula. World number 156 Ann Li conceded just two games as the top seed in qualifying, after receiving a walkover from the second round, but she has drawn one of the shorter straws in the tournament. The 23-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 44th at the start of last season to prove what she is capable of but it has been a pretty lacklustre past two seasons despite recent encouraging signs at the Cincinnati Masters. Back Stephens to start hard with a straight-sets victory.
