Both Simona Waltert and Elizabeth Mandlik qualified the hard way to make their Roland-Garros debuts here, with world number 12 Waltert making her overall Grand Slam debut. The 22-year-old could break the top 100 on tour for the first time with victory here but Mandlik, also 22, is chasing the same goal after moving up to a new career-high of 102nd in the live rankings following a strong qualifying run. There are plenty of similarities for the pair in this wide open opportunity but Mandlik won on her Grand Slam debut at the US Open last September and she came very close to doing the same in Melbourne, taking the first set from 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu before defeat.
