THE PREDICTION
Serbia and Czechia are both already through to the Davis Cup Finals after each whitewashing South Korea and sorry hosts Spain so far this week. World number one Novak Djokovic came in fresh from his US Open victory to drop Laslo Djere back down to second option and Djere did not disappoint with a straight-sets victory over Albert Ramos-Vinolas to complement Djokovic’s straight-sets result over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. With the tie already won, Nikola Cacic and Miomir Kecmanovic paired up well to improve on their efforts against South Korea, beating an already disillusioned Spanish due to confirm their qualification for the Finals.
It was harder than it should have been for Czechia but their young team got the job done against Group C minnows South Korea, with Tomas Machac taking out Seongchan Hong in three tight sets before Jiri Lehecka turned the screw in two against Soonwoo Kwon. 18-year-old rising star Jakub Mensik partnered well with Adam Pavlasek to come back from a set down in the doubles and confirm their qualification for the Finals later this year.
There is still plenty to play for here as the winner of this tie will enjoy a better draw at the Davis Cup Finals in November and the tone should be set in the opening match between in-form Laslo Djere and Tomas Machac, the latter of whom has impressed this week to prove himself much better than his current ATP world ranking of 119th. World number 37 Djere, though, is in some of the form of his career to look the clear favourite in their opening clash and that sets up Novak Djokovic to get the job done early in a first encounter with Jiri Lehecka. 21-year-old Lehecka came into the Group Stages at a career-high ATP world ranking of 29th after impressing on hardcourts everywhere this season and there is the slightest chance of an upset with the tie likely to be on the line, although Djokovic’s 13-match winning streak says otherwise. Back Serbia to win the tie, probably 2-1 with the pressure off in the doubles.
