World number 61 Marcos Giron played well on Thursday to oust Nuno Borges in straight sets and he faces a reasonable shot at the upset here against 29th seed Sebastian Baez. World number 31 Baez won his second ATP title on clay at the Cordoba Open in February but he takes a three-match losing streak into the Madrid Open after early exits in Monte-Carlo and Munich, the latter of which came as a surprise against world number 94 Oscar Otte. The 22-year-old has yet to beat a player ranked inside the top 50 this season and whilst Giron is not current ranked inside that bracket the American has enjoyed the much better results on tour this season. Three sets seen likelier than two here so back Giron to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
