Former world number three Dominic Thiem is through to his first ATP final on tour since undergoing wrist surgery last season and a first since his remarkable 2020, where he won the US Open before finishing runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Finals. The 29-year-old saved five match points in a thrilling comeback over in-form Laslo Djere amidst rapturous support on home clay in Kitzbuhel, a title he won back in 2019. World number 72 Sebastian Baez also saw out a tough foe in top seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Friday, also in three tight sets, to maintain an excellent campaign. The 22-year-old won the Cordoba Open on home clay in Argentina back in February and this is already his fifth tour final on clay, with an impressive 2-2 record so far at this stage.
It is hard to see past the sentiment of this match for Thiem, who has laboured and occasionally looked like faltering in his quest to come back from surgery, but three comeback wins in a row in Kitzbuhel suggests he is finding himself on court in front of adoring home fans.
