THE PREDICTION

This will be an interesting clash between two veterans of the WTA tour, both 36 years old, as former number five Sara Errani takes on current number 49 Tatjana Maria. Errani leads their tour-level head-to-head 3-0 with three consummate victories over the German in 2008, 2009 and 2010 but in recent seasons Maria has been a mainstay on the tour whilst the Italian has put in the odd cameo. However, Errani won the Women’s Doubles title at the Linz Open last weekend and that looks to have supercharged her singles game after she ousted Caty McNally in comfortable straight sets on Wednesday – her first tour-level win since mid-October. Maria beat Zhuoxuan Bai in two on Tuesday to get her campaign underway well but it is notable that she has yet to claim a set from Errani, including last season at a Challenger event in Mexico. Maria should be able to finally find a way through the Italian but the sensible concession is backing the German to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance

TIP: TATJANA MARIA TO WIN A SET
