THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Andy Murray returns to SW19 in better form, and with a higher ranking, than he has managed since his return from hip resurfacing surgery in 2019. The 36-year-old won two of his three Grand Slam titles here in 2013 and 2016 but he has made just three appearances since his peak that year, losing in the quarter-finals a year later and then the third and second in each of the past two seasons. Murray has won three Challenger events this season, two recently on grass, in an attempt to repair his ranking back up to seed standard and whilst it remains to be seen what he can do on his favourite court he has certainly been offered a kind opening draw here.
World number 267 Ryan Peniston enjoyed the summer of his career last season with excellent runs to the quarter-finals at both Queen’s and Eastbourne but he has managed just one win at tour level on grass this month, upsetting Ugo Humbert in Queen’s before defeat to Holger Rune. The left-hander will enjoy a warm welcome to what is likely to be a top show court on Tuesday but the crowd will certainly pull in favour of the two-time former champion who, for all his recent shortcomings, has never lost in the first round. Back Murray to win outright, although three sets should do it.
