World number 103 Roman Safiullin is yet to drop a set this week in Rome after blasting through qualifying to stun Marcos Giron in the first round on Wednesday. The 25-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 82nd back in February and he is well capable of breaking the top 50 as a former top junior with plenty of time left to realise his potential. A run to the third round of the Madrid Open saw him upset 14th seed Tommy Paul in straight sets and he stands a strong chance at emulating that here against world number 29 Sebastian Korda, who is on the way back from an injury absence. The 22-year-old started 2023 off with some serious form, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Adelaide 1 before a run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open via victories over Daniil Medvedev and Hubert Hurkacz but an injury against Karen Khachanov saw him miss all of February, March and April. Korda lost in straight sets to Hugo Grenier at this stage of the Madrid Open but he should be better in this second match back. Take Safiullin to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
