World number 60 Marcos Giron took the first set from Sebastian Baez in the second round of the Madrid Open before losing in three. The 29-year-old has reached four quarter-finals at ATP 250 level this season but there is certainly the sense of a ceiling at Masters tournaments and above. World number 103 Roman Safiullin is better than his current ranking suggests and he proved that with a big upset over 14th seed Tommy Paul to reach the third round in Madrid. This is a tricky call between Safiullin’s occasional high ceiling and Giron’s more dependable consistency but a first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers.
