THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Victoria Azarenka stands to benefit from this underpowered Guadalajara Masters draw if she can just get a few early wins under her belt. The world number 23 has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since the start of the hardcourt swing but her run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open, where she won both of her Grand Slam titles in 2012 and 2013, earlier this season is proof that she can still threaten titles at this level. 19-year-old Robin Montgomery won her Miami Masters debut back in March before a defeat to Madison Keys and she looks one to watch after a successful summer on the ITF circuit. The American is close to breaking her career-high WTA world ranking of 143rd and there is certainly scope for an upset here if Azarenka fails to turn up for a scrap. Azarenka should be coming through in straight sets here given Montgomery’s lack of recent form but an outright call is wise – and that makes taking Montgomery to earn at least a set a reasonable one-off punt.
