THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Roberto Carballes Baena set a career-high ATP world ranking of 49th earlier this month after claiming his second ATP title on clay at the Marrakech Open. The Spaniard struggled to match that intensity in a three-set defeat to Marcos Giron in his first match back but he should be better for it here and he will enjoy some strong support in this first round match in Madrid with more love to go around for the home players in Rafael Nadal’s absence. World number 95 David Goffin best RCB at last season’s Marrakech Open on his way to the title there, a rare island of success in an otherwise poor season by his previous standards. The 32-year-old can be insatiable on clay at his best but we have so rarely seen that level from him over the last few seasons due to huge dips in both form and fitness. Leave this match out of an accumulator given Goffin’s hidden gears but otherwise take Carballes Baena to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
