THE PREDICTION
World number 53 Roberto Carballes Baena continued his excellent form on clay this season to beat an out-of-sorts David Goffin in straight sets on Wednesday. The 30-year-old recently set a career-high ATP world ranking of 49th after winning his second ATP title at the Marrakech Open and he could prove a handful for former Madrid champion Alexander Zverev if the German is not ready to run and run on Friday. Former world number two Zverev can be a real force on clay at his best and it was in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer that he suffered a horrid ankle injury that saw him miss the rest of the season. It should still take some time for the 26-year-old to recover fully but a straight-sets defeat to Christopher O’Connell at the Munich Open last week is a very poor result by his standards. Zverev claimed two of his four Masters titles at the Madrid Open in 2018 and 2021, where his powerful strokes and incredible wingspan complement the high altitude clay conditions perfectly, but this first encounter with RCB is a tricky opener. Leave this match out of an accumulator but otherwise consider a one-off on Carballes Baena, who should be experienced enough to know he has a chance if he makes the German run for everything, to earn at least a set here.
