World number 24 Roberto Bautista Agut came into Roland-Garros with a poor 3-5 record on clay but the Spaniard appeared to exorcise some of it in a straight-sets victory over Yibing Wu on Monday, conceding just two games after a tight first-set tiebreak. The 35-year-old reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open earlier this season before his lull in form and he has twice reached that stage here in Paris in 2016 and 2017, with his best run at a Grand Slam a semi-final exit to eventual champion Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2019. World number 94 Juan Pablo Varillas came back from two sets down to beat Juncheng Shang on Monday to win his first match at this level after five-set exits here last season to Felix Auger-Aliassime and in Melbourne this January to Alexander Zverev. The Peruvian’s has yet to play a Grand Slam match under five sets to suggest this looks a strong candidate for that particular option but the sensible call is taking a potentially rejuvenated Bautista Agut to earn at least two sets as the likelier to edge through. Varillas beat the Spaniard in straight sets last season but RBA’s experience at this level should see him avoid an upset.
