22-year-old Rinky Hijikata overcame Zhizhen Zhang in four impressive sets on Friday to reach the round of 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time on his US Open debut. The Aussie will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 81st for his efforts after passing some tough tests already this week but this should be too steep a climb against New York’s favoured home hopeful. World number 10 Frances Tiafoe dropped his first set of the US Open to Adrian Mannarino but he came back to win in four in hugely encouraging fashion on Saturday. The 25-year-old proved himself here last summer with an incredible run to the semi-finals before defeat to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz and the way is relatively clear to return there before meeting a top 10 player.
Hijikata should not be underestimated with such momentum behind him but Tiafoe should thrive under the challenge in a likely late match on Arthur Ashe on Sunday. Back the American to win outright with four sets about as likely as three.
