23-year-old Rebeka Masarova will break the top 70 for the first time after claiming the best win of her career on Thursday with a shock straight-sets result over 20th seed Donna Vekic. The Spaniard will receive a partisan atmosphere as the home underdog under the lights on the Manolo Santana and she faces a genuine chance at the upset against world number nine Maria Sakkari who, despite her excellence, is not exactly rock solid. 27-year-old Sakkari beat Arantxa Rus in straight sets on Thursday to get a good foothold in Madrid but that result snapped a three-match losing streak from the semi-finals of Indian Wells, where she lost to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. The Greek should be blasting through this first encounter in straight sets at her best but taking her to win outright is the suitably cautious call given the conditions. Backing Masarova to earn at least a set is certainly tempting but probably too sentimental.
