THE PREDICTION
This looks a wide open first meeting between world number 79 Rebecca Marino and number 107 Diana Shnaider. 19-year-old Shnaider burst onto the scene at the Australian Open in January when she took the first set from Maria Sakkari before a well-fought three-set defeat in the second round and she stunned fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova on clay at the Charleston Open early last month for a career-best result. The teenager’s results have been understandably erratic so far this year but she has a powerful game ready to take her up to the next level on tour and 32-year-old Marino may struggle under the weight of it here. The Canadian has played just two matches on clay at the Madrid Open and this will be her first on tour in over a month. Marino is a renowned scrapper who rarely goes down without a fight so back Shnaider to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
