THE PREDICTION

World number 28 Qinwen Zheng should be considered a genuine dark horse for a deep run at the Australian Open as one of a handful of players in Melbourne capable of really troubling Iga Swiatek. The 20-year-old enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough on tour last year, culminating in finishing runner-up to Liudmila Samsonova in the Japan Open final in October, and she took two sets from Swiatek in their two meetings at Roland-Garros and San Diego. The Chinese rising star conceded just two games to Dalma Galfi on Monday and she looks the solid favourite to overcome Bernarda Pera here despite the American’s upward curve. 28-year-old Pera should break the top 40 on tour for the first time sooner rather than later after winning her first two WTA titles back-to-back last summer but a comeback win over Moyuke Uchijama in the first round suggests she is still a ways off that peak on her favoured clay. Back Zheng to win in straight sets.
