World number nine Hubert Hurkacz took the first set from Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before a tight defeat saw Spain go 1-0 up in their vital tie but he later partnered perfectly with Iga Swiatek in the deciding doubles, handing the Spaniards a double bagel to qualify for the last eight. 26-year-old Hurkacz ended last season in blistering form, just missing out on making the ATP Finals qualification before ending up a one-match alternate, with a second Masters title claimed in Shanghai seeing a tight three-set victory over Zhizhen Zhang in the round of 16. World number 58 Zhang went on to return the favour against Hurkacz at the Tokyo Open, also in three sets, to trail 2-1 in their head-to-head record and this promises to be an entertaining battle ahead of the vital clash between Swiatek and Qinwen Zheng. 27-year-old Zhang enjoyed a career-best season last year and it will be fascinating to see how he fares in 2024.
A straight-sets defeat to Novak Djokovic and a tight three-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka in his group matches suggest he may just fall short against Hurkacz here but three sets seem likelier than two.
