THE PREDICTION

35-year-old Laura Siegemund came back from a set down to beat Nadia Podoroska on Wednesday, backing up an impressive qualifying campaign this week. The German veteran has enjoyed some strong performances this season and a return to her favoured clay in this form could see her break back inside the top 100. World number 33 Petra Martic also favours clay but she lost her first match on the surface at the Stuttgart Open last week, albeit in three tight sets to in-form Anastasia Potapova. Both matches between these two have seen three sets on clay courts with 32-year-odl Martic winning in Bucharest in 2018 and Siegemund returning the favour in the third round of Roland-Garros two years later. That makes taking Martic to earn at least a set the suitably cautious move and the three-set option a reasonable risk.
