THE PREDICTION
This is a tricky call between world number 39 Tallon Griekspoor and number 135 Pedro Martinez for a number of reasons. 26-year-old Griekspoor started 2023 off on fire, winning his maiden ATP title at the Pune Open and going on several strong runs on hardcourts including a semi-final exit to Jannik Sinner at the Rotterdam 500, but he takes a four-match losing streak into the first round on his weakest surface. Martinez, also 26, won his maiden ATP title on his favoured clay at the Chile Open last February and he is capable of much better tennis than his current deflated ranking suggests. The Spaniard qualified well this week to make the main draw in relative comfort but neither player can be confidently backed in this first meeting. Take Martinez to earn at least two sets in these conditions and leave the victor up to chance in a match that could well see five.
