THE PREDICTION
World number 46 Ben Shelton reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on his debut back in January but the 20-year-old has struggled to cope under the newfound pressure. There were plenty of encouraging signs in his past two weeks, though, with first round wins in Toronto and Cincinnati before competitive straight-set defeats to Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, respectively. There will be plenty of hype around the up-and-coming US star here in New York but this us a tough opening draw against world number 66 Pedro Cachin, who recently won his maiden ATP title at the Gstaad Open in July. The 28-year-old is far more comfortable on his favoured clay but he impressed in defeat to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last month to look a threat on all surfaces and sets should go both ways in this first meeting between two very capable victors. Back Shelton to blossom here backed by a partisan atmosphere to win outright, probably in four or five.
