World number 35 Paula Badosa laid down a huge marker on Friday with an excellent straight-sets victory over Ons Jabeur, last season’s runner-up in Rome. Former world number two Badosa has endured a distinctly average past 12 months on tour to fall back out of the seeds for now but there have been clear improvements in her game since returning to her favoured clay and it will be interesting to see what she can achieve over the next few weeks. World number 40 Marta Kostyuk conceded just four games to Claire Liu on Friday as she continues to enjoy the best period of her promising young career. The 20-year-old claimed her maiden WTA title at the Austin Open back in March and despite an early exit in Madrid’s singles to weeks ago she enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals in the doubles alongside Elena-Gabriela Ruse. Kostyuk and Badosa played out one of the matches of last season at the 2022 Australian Open, with Badosa just edging through to reach the round of 16. Back the Spaniard to win outright once again here with three sets a distinct possibility.
