THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka is an excellent all-courter but it still came as a big surprise to see her blast Barbora Krejcikova off the court in straight sets on Thursday. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here in Stuttgart last season in a rare island of calm amidst her woeful form in the first of half of 2022 and she beat Paula Badosa in straight sets in the semi-finals to do so. Former number two Badosa leads their head-to-head 2-1, though, after two victories in late 2021 at her best level in Cincinnati and the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. The current word number 31 has conceded just five games so far in a welcome return to some sort of confidence on court but the indoor conditions in Stuttgart should come to Sabalenka’s aid once again here. Badosa has every chance at the upset but take Sabalenka to reach the semi-finals here, probably in two if she can maintain her level from the round of 16.
