30-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic entered the history books here last summer as the player who ended Serena Williams’ professional career in a three-set third round win. The Aussie set a career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd earlier this season, built mostly on reaching quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open last summer, but this will be her first match of 2023 after a long injury lay-off. Now at world number 130, Tomljanovic has been fortunate in the draw to face a player ranked just six places above her in Panna Udvardy, who has taken just three tour-level wins this season. It is well worth leaving this match out of an accumulator but Tomljanovic could be a serious anomaly at the US Open this fortnight if she can hit the ground running. Back the Aussie to win outright.
