World number six Ons Jabeur played some scintillating tennis in her round of 16 clash with Petra Kvitova on Monday but she was helped by a poor performance from the two-tome champion to come through very comfortably. The 28-year-old has dropped just one set so far this campaign after fighting back against Bianca Andreescu in the third round and this is her third quarter-final at Wimbledon in a row to prove her credentials in these conditions. Jabeur took the first set from Elena Rybakina in last summer’s final at SW19 before a shock defeat and she will be the popular underdog in this enticing rematch.

World number three and defending champion Elena Rybakina dropped the first set of her campaign to Shelby Rogers last week but she has not looked back since, conceding just three games in each of her last two rounds in a mis-match against Katie Boulter and then an unfortunate injury to her round of 16 opponent Beatriz Haddad-Maia. Illness saw the Kazakh withdraw from Roland-Garros last month and miss most of the grass swing to look undercooked coming into Wimbledon but she played herself back into contention and then some now, with just one break of serve suffered in four matches testament to some truly perfect serving.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling rematch between last summer’s finalists, with the always popular Ons Jabeur set to receive the lion’s share of the love as the underdog this time around and not the favourite. The pair share a tight, finely poised head-to-head at two wins apiece and three of their four meetings have required a decider, with Jabeur’s victory in Chicago two years ago coming via a retirement in the second set. Rybakina is the clear favourite to win here and perhaps now the title after her imperious performances but if Jabeur finds her very best level, backed by an adoring Centre Court, she is well capable of avenging her defeat. There are so few opportunities to break Rybakina’s serve, though, and the Kazakh has won each of her last four tiebreaks since a remarkable 16-14 loss to Petra Kvitova in the Miami Open final to show the depths to which Jabeur will have to go. Back Rybakina to win outright here or take her to earn at least a set and add at least one tiebreak in the match to avoid the result.
