ONS JABEUR
World number six Ons Jabeur avenged her defeat to Elena Rybakina in the Wimbledon final last summer with some of the best tennis she has ever played. The 28-year-old was just edged out in the opening tiebreak with Rybakina, who herself came back from a set down to cause an upset last summer, before rallying admirably to conceded just five games from there. Jabeur twice finsihed runner-up at Grand Slams last season after defeat to Iga Swiatek at the US Open, setting a career-high WTA world ranking of second to achieve one of her career goals of becoming the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals.
ARYNA SABALENKA
World number two Aryna Sabalenka looked solid throughout her quarter-final victory over Madison Keys, ousting the American in straight sets to continue her impressive run. The 25-year-old had to serve to stay in the match against Varvara Gracheva in the second round but she has not looked back since to make her second semi-finals here at Wimbledon, with eventual runner-up Karolina Pliskova beating her to the 2021 final. Sabalenka returns to SW19 as a new Grand Slam champion after victory over Elena Rybakina at the Australian Open in January and she reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros for the first time last month before a shock defeat to Karolina Muchova in three sets.
THE PREDICTION
Ons Jabeur has now beaten two of the pre-tournament title favourites in Petra Kvitova and Elena Rybakina but she will face the overall favourite next. Aryna Sabalenka’s power serve and fierce groundstrokes suit the conditions here at SW19 as a game reminiscent, purposefully, of Serena Williams’ dominant streak here. The Belarussian will have to cope with playing the villain of the piece against Jabeur, who would be one of the most popular winners of Wimbledon ever if she does lift the trophy on Saturday, but she is a hardier, more composed version of herself this season after claiming that first major title. Jabeur’s performance against Rybakina was nothing short of exemplary. The Tunisian played some of her natural trickery on court but she also served and returned with venom to suddenly look a genuine contender.
The winner of Wimbledon is likely to come from this semi-final and it is hard to look past Sabalenka’s 3-1 head-to-head lead here with victories in each of their last three encounters, including Wimbledon in 2021. Back Sabalenka to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable finalists or risk the outright call.
