World number three Novak Djokovic looks to have found some rhythm in Paris after a choppy few rounds, despite winning all four of his matches in straight sets so far, and he looks a considerable threat to title favourite Carlos Alcaraz all of a sudden. The 36-year-old won his second Roland-Garros title at Stefanos Tsitsipas’ expense here two years ago and he is targeting a Men’s Singles record 23rd Grand Slam title this weekend with defending champion Rafael Nadal absent from his fortress in Paris. World number 11 Karen Khachanov came back from a set down to overcome Lorenzo Sonego well on Sunday, backing-up a hard-fought four-set victory over Thanasi Kokkinakis. The 27-year-old will move back inside the top 10 on tour for the first time since late 2019 when he lost the ranking points from his most recent of four ATP titles, and his most prestigious, claimed at Djokovic’s expense at the Paris Masters in 2018.
Since then, however, Djokovic has won each of their last seven encounters to lead 8-1 in a very convincing head-to-head – including a straight-sets victory here in 2020. Khachanov has taken just one set from Djokovic outside of his Paris victory but that did come on clay in Serbia last summer and the Russian’s determination makes him dangerous to count out over five sets. Backing Djokovic to win outright is the suitably cautious approach here.
