THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling rematch between world number one Novak Djokovic and world number seven Holger Rune after the Dane came back from a set down to shock Djokovic in the Paris Masters final last November. Djokovic won their first encounter at the US Open back in 2021 but Rune too a set that day to foreshadow the top 10 player he would soon become and this match will probably need a decider, particularly as it is their first on Rune’s favoured clay. 35-year-old Djokovic is a six-time champion here in Rome, though, and he is beginning to find form on the surface to looks more and more capable of defending his title from last season. A round of 16 win, full of aggro, over Cam Norrie will only fuel the Serb’s fire more but Rune lives for these blockbuster occasions – just as he proved when facing down the whole of Rome in his third round victory over Fabio Fognini. Sets have gone both ways in both of their previous matches and that makes the three-set option feel a suitable way to avoid siding with one or the other here, particularly as Djokovic is still far from back up to full speed. Otherwise, take Rune to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
