Defending champion and world number one Novak Djokovic survived an early scare to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets on Friday in a much more encouraging performance than we have seen since the start of the clay swing. The 35-year-old has won six of his record 38 Masters titles here in Rome, joint with Indian Wells and Paris, and he remains the only player to have completed the ‘set’ of all nine after taking the Cincinnati Open in 2018. Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov played well to beat in-form Stan Wawrinka in straight sets on Friday but there are few more one-sided head-to-head records than his with Djokovic. 31-year-old Dimitrov did once beat the Serb in three sets, on clay, at the 2013 Madrid Open but Djokovic leads their head-to-head 10-1 after claiming each of their last eight encounters – including in three sets en-route to the Australian Open this January. Back Djokovic to win outright here, though, as he is still vulnerable by his high standards after a choppy few weeks on tour.
