Former world number one Victoria Azarenka beat fellow former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in two tight sets on Monday for an encouraging opening win. The 33-year-old claimed her two Grand Slam titles in back-to-back seasons here in 2012 and 2013 but whilst the peak of her powers are behind her she was runner-up at the US Open back in 2020 and she made the second week both here and in New York in 2022. Former top 40 player Nadia Podoroska was due to take on home hopeful Ajla Tomljanovic on Monday but the Aussie dropped out to leave a considerably easier task in lucky loser Leolia Jeanjean, to whom she conceded just three games. The Argentine is on the long road back to the upper-end of the sport after a year-long absence through injury but she famously beat Serena Williams at Roland-Garros in 2020 en-route to the semi-finals. Hardcourt conditions, especially here in Australia, heavily favour Azarenka and she will be glad of a match where she feels welcomed like a champion after some tough experiences on tour over the past year.
