Two former top 40 players meet here in what could prove an entertaining clash. World number 104 Nadia Podoroska looked set to be a factor on the next five clay swings at least when she burst onto the scene with a brilliant run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2020 but injuries have seen her pushed back into obscurity. The 26-year-old still has plenty of time to recover on tour and 35-year-old Laura Siegemund has proved this season that age can be just be a number when you find some form as she took Caroline Garcia to three sets in the third round of the Australian Open back in January. The German veteran has struggled to impose herself on tournaments since but she qualified well to make the main draw here in Madrid and those two wins should see her the more acclimatised to the altitude. Podoroska beat Siegemund in three sets in their only previous meeting at this stage of the Rome Masters back in 2021 but back Siegemund to earn at least a set once again here as the likelier of two capable victors.
