16-year-old Mirra Andreeva could have felt hard done by not to receive a wildcard for Wimbledon after her remarkable debut season so far but the rising star qualified the hard way this week, dropping just one set en-route to her debut. Andreeva finished runner-up in the Girls’ Singles at the Australian Open in January and the made mincemeat of the ITF circuit before a stunning tour debut at the Madrid Open, where she beat three top 20 players, past and present, before defeat to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in the round of 16. The 22-year-old made the third round at the US Open last summer with a shock victory over Maria Sakkari to prove her credentials but Andreeva’s no-nonsense, baggage-less tennis should be insatiable here. The crowd will pull for the teenager but Andreeva is no underdog. Back the Russian to win outright.
