15-year-old Mirra Andreeva finished runner-up in the Girls’ Singles at the Australian Open back in January and she has been awarded a wildcard to make her WTA tour debut at the Madrid Open after back-to-back ITF titles won this month on clay. The world number 194 is clearly one to watch, then, but she has been handed one of the tougher draws in the first round as world number 49 Leylah Fernandez is an excellent competitor on clay and far better than her current ranking suggests. The 20-year-old famously finished runner-up to Emma Raducanu at the US Open in 2021 but a run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer is proof of what she can achieve in these conditions. The Canadian’s confidence does seem a little low at the moment, though, and that makes taking her to win outright the sensible concession. In this case, consider a small on-off on Andreeva to ride her momentum to at least a set here.
