THE PREDICTION

16-year-old Mirra Andreeva will break the top 100 on tour for the first time after another dominant display over Diane Parry on Thursday saw her through to the third round of Roland-Garros on her debut. The Russian burst onto the scene with a blistering run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open last month, stunning top 20 opponents past and present in Leylah Fernandez, Beatriz Haddad-Maia and Magda Linette en-route. World number six Coco Gauff will remember well what it is like to burst onto the scene on the biggest stage after her remarkable run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon on her debut back in 2019, at 15 years old, but she faces a serious challenge here. The American, now 19, finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here last summer but she survived an early scare against Rebeka Masarova in the first round, coming back from a set down, before a much more comfortable second round win over Julia Grabher.

Andreeva has so far been expected to win, such is her clear talent, but whilst surely the underdog here she has nothing to lose and zero baggage on her shoulders. Gauff should have enough to come through but all the pressure is on the sixth seed and she has struggled to find her best game all season. Back Andreeva to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
