16-year-old Mirra Andreeva beat Xiyu Wang in three sets on Wednesday in an impressive Wimbledon debut and she will break the top 100 on tour for the first time as a result. The Russian was playing in the Australian Open juniors just six months ago but her meteoric rise, fuelled mostly by a stunning run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Open, is certainly hype to be believed. World number 11 Barbora Krejcikova recently finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Birmingham Classic to look a candidate for a deep run at SW19 and she started her campaign off well with a strong performance against home hopeful Heather Watson. The 27-year-old won Roland-Garros two years ago in her breakthrough season in singles tennis, also making the round of 16 here, but she is a multiple Grand Slam champion in doubles, including twice here in 2018 and last summer. The Czech’s disruptive, measured game should be able to cope with Andreeva’s momentum in this first meeting between the two but three sets would not be a surprise. Andreeva made the third round in Paris last month before losing to a top player in Coco Gauff and despite her rising status Krejcikova can be backed to edge through here.
