World number 17 Hubert Hurkacz overcame Alexander Bublik in straight sets on Monday for an encouraging start to the Canada Masters, where he finished runner-up to Pablo Carreno Busta last summer. The 26-year-old had won each of his first five ATP finals in a row before that defeat here last season and it could be argued that he has suffered a mini crisis of confidence since with so many three-set matches this season depicting a player struggling to see out wins. World number 44 Miomir Kecmanovic has finished runner-up twice this season, to Taylor Fritz at the Delray Beach Open and Casper Ruud in Estoril, but he brought a negative record into Toronto to display some fairly concerning consistency issues. A three-set victory over Cristian Garin on Tuesday was a strong one but the Serb’s recent form has been all over the place, alternating between first round exits and quarter-finals over his last five tournaments.
Hurkacz is at his best on a hardcourt and he has pedigree at this level as the Miami Open champion two years ago. Back the Pole to come through outright here with three sets about as likely as two. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak with both players seeing one in their opening matches.
