THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Frances Tiafoe looked a solid favourite to reach the Washington Open final this week before a remarkable display by Dan Evans saw him dismissed in the quarter-finals. The 25-year-old is coming up to the anniversary of his career-best run to the semi-finals of the US Open, where he came closer than anybody to beating eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz, and he will be desperate to perform on the stages leading up to New York after earning two more ATP titles this year. Former world number three Milos Raonic won the Washington Open back in 2014 but he has yet to win a Masters title, finishing runner-up four times on hardcourt events here in 2013, Paris, Indian Wells, and most recently Cincinnati in 2020. The Canadian returned to tour from an almost two-year-absence in June and won his opening match at the Libema Open before running out of steam against Jordan Thompson. A four-set defeat to Tommy Paul in the second round of Wimbledon last month suggests he is building back some real strength at 32 years old and he will be a handful for anyone early on a hardcourt.
Home advantage does make this interesting but Tiafoe should be too strong to be upset here. The American beat Raonic in three sets at the 2018 Canada Masters and he can be backed to come through outright in this second encounter.
