World number nine Taylor Fritz survived an early scare against in-form Yannick Hanfmann in the first round, coming back from an overnight rain delay to take the fifth set in assured fashion on Wednesday. The 25-year-old set his best Grand Slam exit here last summer in a five-set defeat to Rafael Nadal but he has struggled on grass so far this season, with a surprise early exit in Eastbourne last week as the defending champion. World number 59 Mikael Ymer is through to the second round here for the third season in a row after a comprehensive straight-sets result over Alex Molcan but the Swede faces a much tougher prospect here. Fritz’ recent struggles may have been exorcised in the first round and the American is certainly one of the better grass-courters on tour with a superb, flat forehand keeping it low over the net. A first meeting between the two should, at his best, go Fritz’ way in three sets but take the American to won outright here for caution’s sake.
