THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Ben Shelton received a bye to the round of 16 here in Dallas as the third seed this week and he will be eager to bounce back from a surprising third round exit to Adrian Mannarino, in five madcap sets, at the Australian Open. The 21-year-old burst onto the scene in Melbourne a year ago with a huge run to the quarter-finals but he usurped that effort in New York with a semi-final exit to eventual champion Novak Djokovic at the US Open. Shelton picked up his maiden ATP title at the Tokyo Open soon after, to put aside some rather concerning main tour form in 2023, but he should have made it two in Auckland this time last month when he was shocked by Taro Daniel in the semi-finals of a low-ranked field. World number 115 Michael Mmoh beat Emilio Nava in straight sets on Tuesday to continue his strong recent form, with a rare run to the quarter-finals of a tour event last week in Montpellier ended in tight straight sets by top seed Holger Rune. The 26-year-old stands a decent chance at the upset given Shelton’s record at ATP 250 level so far but back the younger American to see it through outright.
TIP: BEN SHELTON TO WIN
