World number 26 Qinwen Zheng looks the new favourite for the Palermo Ladies Open after top seed Daria Kasatkina was upset in the quarter-finals on Friday. The 20-year-old has impressed across all surfaces but her most eye-catching results have come on clay and she looks strong this week after a comfortable win over Emma Navarro on Friday. World number 38 Mayar Sherif won her maiden WTA title on Italian clay last season in Parma and she only recently enjoyed the best run of her career with a quarter-final exit at the Madrid Masters, where she took the first set from eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka before defeat. A straight-sets victory over Camila Osorio is best of their combined results this week but Zheng should have too much for Sherif if the Chinese rising star brings her best. Back the second seed to reach the final.
