World number 59 Mayar Sherif is enjoying the most prestigious run of her career so far after stunning fifth seed Caroline Garcia in straight sets to reach the round of 16 at the Madrid Open. The 26-year-old claimed a career-best ranking win over Maria Sakkari to win her maiden title in Parma late last season but this victory eclipses that in more ways than one, backing up two strong performances against Anhelina Kalinina and Camila Giorgi. Former world number 12 Elise Mertens looks like she is moving back towards her rock-steady status of previous years after a fairly shaky 2022, in singles at least. The 27-year-old overcame Jule Niemeier, fresh from stunning Petra Kvitova, in straight sets on Saturday to suggest she remains the favourite in this first meeting with Sherif but there are more questions than answers. Back the more dependable Mertens to earn at least a set to avoid having to side with either player.
