THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Mayar Sherif will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 41st after enjoying by far the best campaign of her career. The Egyptian beat Maria Sakkari to claim her maiden WTA title last summer in Parma but a run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open via upsets over Anhelina Kalinina, Elise Mertens and WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia would have been beyond her wildest dreams. Eventually, though, all roads on the WTA tour lead to one of world number one Iga Swiatek or number two Aryna Sabalenka and this looks too steep a challenge here. 24-year-old Sabalenka has already halted the incredible journey of 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva in ruthless fashion and the Belarussian should make it four straight-set wins on the spin in Madrid as a former champion with all the tools required to excel here. Back Sabalenka to win in two.
