27-year-okd Mayar Sherif set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 43rd this week after an incredible run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open, where she took eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka to three sets before defeat. The Egyptian stunned three seeds to reach the last eight but a straight-sets victory over Caroline Garcia was the pick of the bunch to suggest she will need some serious ousting here in Rome. World number 73 Anna Blinkova ended last season with a maiden WTA title claimed at the Transylvania Open and she started 2023 in much the same form but she has managed just four wins from her last 11 at tour level. It remains to be seen how Sherif will compete after a career-best run but the Egyptian should have enough to sneak past Blinkova on her favoured surface, particularly as she should enjoy the lion’s share of support here.
